About the Staff Nurse Role

The Staff Nurse plays a vital role in delivering professional nursing care within a multidisciplinary healthcare team. Guided by the standards of the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives and the Canadian Nurses Association, the role focuses on ensuring safe, compassionate, and evidence-based care for patients.

Working within hospital policies and nursing practice standards, the Staff Nurse coordinates direct patient care using the nursing process, while supporting colleagues and responding effectively in emergency situations.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver Patient-Centered Nursing Care

  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans using the nursing process.
  • Provide direct clinical care that meets safety and quality standards.
  • Monitor patient conditions and respond promptly to changes in health status.

Collaborate With Healthcare Teams

  • Work closely with physicians, healthcare professionals, and support staff.
  • Provide guidance and supervision to auxiliary healthcare personnel.
  • Contribute to coordinated care that supports patient recovery and well-being.

Ensure Safety and Emergency Response

  • Maintain readiness to respond to medical emergencies and urgent care needs.
  • Uphold patient safety protocols and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Protect the well-being of patients, visitors, and healthcare staff.

Qualifications and Professional Requirements

To succeed as a Staff Nurse, candidates should combine strong clinical knowledge with compassion, communication skills, and the ability to work in fast-paced healthcare environments.

Education & Certification

  • Registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Level C certification for general duty nurse roles.

Specialty Certifications (Role Dependent)

Certain clinical units may require additional qualifications, including:

  • Operating Room or Post-Anesthetic Recovery certification
  • Obstetrics or Paediatrics specialization
  • Psychiatric nursing certification
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) for emergency or critical care roles

Experience

  • Up to 1 year of recent clinical nursing experience for general duty roles.
  • Up to 2 years of relevant experience for specialty or critical care units.
