Nurse Job Overview

The Nurse (RN) will function as the primary healthcare provider and health services coordinator within the school setting. This role focuses on developing and managing a comprehensive school health program that protects the health rights and promotes the overall wellness of students and staff.

Key Responsibilities of the School Nurse

The Nurse plays a central role in maintaining a safe and healthy school environment by delivering clinical care, health education, and wellness leadership.

Student Health Management

  • Assess and respond to student and staff health concerns, including injuries and chronic conditions
  • Provide health screenings such as hearing, vision, scoliosis, and acanthosis assessments
  • Maintain detailed student health records, including immunizations and treatment documentation
  • Implement individualized healthcare plans for students with medical needs

Clinical Care and Emergency Preparedness

  • Administer medications and monitor treatment plans
  • Provide first aid and emergency response during medical incidents
  • Train school staff in First Aid, CPR, and AED protocols following American Red Cross guidelines
  • Promote disease prevention and ensure compliance with Texas immunization laws

Chronic Condition and Specialized Care

School Nurses also manage complex student health needs, including:

  • Diabetes care and blood glucose monitoring
  • Seizure and anaphylaxis management
  • Tracheostomy and ventilator support
  • Gastrostomy feedings and catheterization care

Qualifications and Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited program

Licensure and Certifications

  • Current CPR and AED certification

Preferred certifications include:

  • First Aid Instructor Certification
  • Hearing, Vision, Scoliosis, and Acanthosis screening certification

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a BSN-prepared Registered Nurse preferred
  • Recent direct patient care experience within the past five years
