Key Responsibilities of the Registered Nurse
Deliver High-Quality Resident Care
Provide professional nursing care in accordance with established policies, physician directives, and individualized resident care plans. Ensure that all care services align with current clinical standards and best practices.
Resident Assessment and Care Planning
Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate comprehensive care programs that address residents’ physical, emotional, psychological, cultural, and social needs.
Medication Administration and Clinical Procedures
Administer medications safely and perform skilled nursing procedures while maintaining accurate documentation and following regulatory standards.
Safe Admissions, Transfers, and Discharges
Ensure that all resident admissions include a thorough orientation process. Coordinate transfers and discharges safely while maintaining continuity of care.
Emergency Response and Leadership
Respond promptly to emergencies and provide immediate leadership until senior management or clinical leadership assumes responsibility.
Collaboration with Healthcare Professionals
Work closely with physicians, clinical specialists, therapists, and other healthcare providers to ensure coordinated and effective resident care.
Mentorship and Team Leadership
Provide guidance and supervision to nursing staff such as Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and personal support staff. Act as a professional role model and promote best nursing practices.
Compliance and Operational Support
Maintain strict control and documentation of medications, including narcotics, and ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and safety standards.
Required Qualifications
To succeed in this Registered Nurse position, candidates should meet the following requirements:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN), Bachelor of Nursing (BN), or equivalent qualification
- Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Valid Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
- Minimum of two years of clinical nursing experience
- Experience in long-term care, geriatric nursing, or rehabilitation care preferred
- Current RAI/MDS certification as required by the Ministry of Health
- Strong knowledge of clinical nursing practices and geriatric care standards
Knowledge and Professional Expertise
Successful candidates will demonstrate knowledge of:
- Long-term care nursing and geriatric care practices
- Resident care planning and nursing assessment techniques
- Healthcare legislation and regulatory compliance
- Medication safety and pharmaceutical protocols
- Occupational health and safety standards in healthcare environments
Relevant legislation may include the Nursing Homes Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and other applicable healthcare regulations.
