About the Short Stay Surgery Unit
A Fast-Paced, Supportive Surgical Environment
The SSS unit is a 17-bed elective surgical ward providing care across multiple specialties, including:
- Urology
- Colorectal surgery
- Upper gastrointestinal (GI)
- Breast surgery
- Gynaecology
- ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat)
In addition to elective care, the ward also supports emergency general surgery, offering a diverse and engaging clinical experience.
Your Role as a Band 6 Sister
As a senior nurse, you will combine clinical expertise with leadership responsibility, ensuring safe, effective, and patient-centred care.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate shifts within the surgical ward
- Deliver and oversee high-quality, evidence-based patient care
- Support and mentor junior nurses and students
- Contribute to audit, quality improvement, and clinical governance
- Promote effective communication within the multidisciplinary team
- Ensure patient safety, dignity, and optimal care outcomes
Qualifications & Experience
Essential Requirements
- Valid NMC registration as a Registered Nurse
- Degree in Nursing (or working towards one)
- Evidence of continuous professional development (CPD)
- Post-basic qualification in a relevant specialty (where applicable)
- Mentorship or teaching qualification
Essential Experience
- Experience in general surgery or urology wards
- Knowledge of current clinical standards and best practices
- Experience participating in clinical audits
Desirable
- Leadership training or management course
- Exposure to critical care environments
Skills & Competencies
- Strong leadership and decision-making skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication
- Ability to teach, mentor, and assess staff
- Advanced clinical nursing skills in surgical care
- Proven ability to support change management and service improvement
