About the Short Stay Surgery Unit

A Fast-Paced, Supportive Surgical Environment

The SSS unit is a 17-bed elective surgical ward providing care across multiple specialties, including:

  • Urology
  • Colorectal surgery
  • Upper gastrointestinal (GI)
  • Breast surgery
  • Gynaecology
  • ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat)

In addition to elective care, the ward also supports emergency general surgery, offering a diverse and engaging clinical experience.

Your Role as a Band 6 Sister

As a senior nurse, you will combine clinical expertise with leadership responsibility, ensuring safe, effective, and patient-centred care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate shifts within the surgical ward
  • Deliver and oversee high-quality, evidence-based patient care
  • Support and mentor junior nurses and students
  • Contribute to audit, quality improvement, and clinical governance
  • Promote effective communication within the multidisciplinary team
  • Ensure patient safety, dignity, and optimal care outcomes

Qualifications & Experience

Essential Requirements

  • Valid NMC registration as a Registered Nurse
  • Degree in Nursing (or working towards one)
  • Evidence of continuous professional development (CPD)
  • Post-basic qualification in a relevant specialty (where applicable)
  • Mentorship or teaching qualification

Essential Experience

  • Experience in general surgery or urology wards
  • Knowledge of current clinical standards and best practices
  • Experience participating in clinical audits

Desirable

  • Leadership training or management course
  • Exposure to critical care environments

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong leadership and decision-making skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Ability to teach, mentor, and assess staff
  • Advanced clinical nursing skills in surgical care
  • Proven ability to support change management and service improvement
