About the Role
As a Registered Nurse (RN) in the ASCU, your responsibilities include:
Preoperative and Procedural Care
- Conduct thorough nursing assessments, verify patient consent, and validate health histories (H&P).
- Start intravenous (IV) therapy, including venipuncture, and assist with peripheral nerve blocks.
- Ensure all lab work and pre-procedure testing are completed and communicated to the surgical team.
- Confirm surgical sites are accurately marked and prepared for procedures.
Patient Education & Postoperative Care
- Provide clear preoperative teaching and discharge instructions to patients and families.
- Monitor patients after anesthesia or sedation for changes in consciousness and potential side effects.
- Deliver care aligned with American Society of Perianesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) standards and VHA directives.
Documentation & Patient Advocacy
- Maintain accurate and timely electronic health records for all phases of care.
- Apply patient, family, and caregiver knowledge, values, and beliefs to ensure individualized care.
- Advocate for patient safety, satisfaction, and optimized outcomes.
Qualifications
To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing (ACEN or CCNE).
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted Registered Nurse license in any U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English.
- Physical ability to perform tasks such as walking, standing, lifting, and transferring patients, with mechanical lifts provided for safety.
Preferred Experience Levels:
- Nurse I: Entry-level with ADN, Diploma, or BSN.
- Nurse II: BSN with 2 years of experience or MSN with 1 year of specialized experience.
- Nurse III: Advanced leadership role with an MSN or Doctoral degree and specialized experience.
