Key Responsibilities of a Charge Nurse
Supervise and Lead Nursing Staff
- Direct, manage, and coordinate the daily care provided by nursing personnel.
- Monitor staff compliance with all state and federal healthcare regulations, including infection control, fire safety, and resident rights.
- Provide support to nursing staff during high-demand periods, including assisting residents when additional help is needed.
Resident Care Management
- Coordinate care according to individualized resident care plans.
- Communicate regularly with family members regarding resident progress and care needs.
- Assist visiting physicians during rounds, as required.
- Administer medications and treatments accurately and timely according to facility policies.
Clinical Duties
- Draw blood and collect samples for lab work.
- Provide direct care in emergencies, illness, or disability situations.
- Ensure resident cleanliness, hygiene, and proper nutrition, including assistance in dining areas as needed.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate records of resident care, progress, and incidents.
- Prepare and submit reports, as required by the facility or regulatory agencies.
- Replace nursing staff who call in sick, maintaining smooth operation of the unit.
Essential Qualifications
- Valid Kansas nursing license in good standing.
- Basic computer proficiency; strong communication skills in English.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
- Experience supervising nursing staff preferred.
- Physically capable of assisting residents with mobility and lifting requirements up to 50 lbs.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent lifting and carrying of 10–25 lbs; occasional lifting of 26–50 lbs.
- Constant reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, and handling objects.
- Ability to perform movements including bending, twisting, kneeling, crouching, and balancing.
- Must relate effectively to residents who may be ill, disabled, elderly, or emotionally distressed.
