About the Nurse Role
Healthcare Leadership and Clinical Oversight
The Nurse at The Arc Montgomery County serves as a Registered Nurse (RN) responsible for overseeing nursing care management within the organization’s Employment & Meaningful Day and Personal Support programs.
Rather than providing direct bedside care, this role focuses on clinical oversight, staff delegation, and healthcare coordination. Working under the supervision of the Director of Quality Assurance, the Nurse ensures that all nursing activities comply with Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON) regulations, COMAR standards, and the organization’s policies.

Key Responsibilities of the Nurse
Comprehensive Nursing Assessments
One of the primary responsibilities of the Nurse is conducting detailed health assessments for individuals receiving services.
Key duties include:
- Performing initial nursing assessments for newly assigned individuals
- Developing and maintaining personalized Nursing Care Plans (NCPs)
- Conducting 45-day follow-up assessments and updating care plans
- Completing focused assessments after hospital visits, urgent care, or new diagnoses
- Monitoring medical appointments and ensuring appropriate follow-up care
These assessments help ensure individuals receive safe, consistent, and well-coordinated healthcare support.
Medical Documentation and Medication Oversight
The Nurse is also responsible for ensuring all medical records, physician orders, and medication procedures meet regulatory and organizational standards.
Responsibilities include:
- Reviewing Professional Medical Order Forms (PMOFs) for accuracy and compliance
- Monitoring medication storage and administration procedures
- Performing a three-way verification process (PMOF, pharmacy label, and documentation)
- Identifying and resolving medication errors using established protocols
- Ensuring compliance with Maryland COMAR and nursing regulations
This oversight strengthens patient safety and supports effective healthcare compliance and clinical governance.
Delegating Nursing Tasks and Staff Training
The Nurse provides leadership and clinical support to staff members responsible for day-to-day care.
Key responsibilities include:
- Delegating nursing tasks according to Maryland State nursing delegation regulations
- Training staff such as Certified Medication Technicians (CMTs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs)
- Supervising staff competency in delegated healthcare tasks
- Conducting Medication Technician Training Program (MTTP) courses and refresher sessions
- Providing ongoing guidance to ensure safe and effective care delivery
Through training and mentorship, the Nurse helps maintain high standards of patient care across all programs.
Communication and Healthcare Advocacy
Effective communication is essential in this role. The Nurse acts as a bridge between individuals receiving services, their families, healthcare providers, and staff teams.
Responsibilities include:
- Providing telephone triage and medical guidance to staff
- Serving as a liaison with physicians, families, and healthcare professionals
- Participating in Person-Centered Planning (PCP) meetings
- Advocating for the healthcare needs of individuals supported by the organization
This collaborative approach ensures individuals receive coordinated and person-centered healthcare services.
Additional Leadership Responsibilities
The Nurse also contributes to organizational committees and healthcare planning initiatives, including:
- Admissions, Discharge, and Review Committee participation
- Human Rights Committee involvement
- Providing recommendations for behavioral or medical support plans
- Participating in intake meetings for new service applicants
- Managing healthcare documentation within the agency database
These contributions support quality assurance, ethical care practices, and program development.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education and Professional Credentials
Candidates applying for the Nurse position must meet the following qualifications:
Required
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Maryland
- Current CPR certification
- Professional nursing experience
- Ability to provide 24/7 telephone triage support when required
- Ability to travel between agency sites or residences of supported individuals
Preferred
- Experience in Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) services
- Background in home healthcare or residential care programs
- RN/Case Manager/Delegating Nurse certification maintained per DDA requirements
Compensation and Work Environment
- Annual Salary: $74,117
