Mercy Hospice
About Company
Mercy Hospice is a specialist palliative care provider dedicated to supporting people living with life-limiting illnesses across central Auckland. With a strong foundation built on compassion, dignity, and professional excellence, the organisation delivers both community-based and inpatient hospice services tailored to the needs of patients and their families.
Operating from its 8-bed Inpatient Unit in Ponsonby, Mercy Hospice also cares for hundreds of patients in their homes and communities at any given time. Services extend across Auckland city and surrounding central suburbs — from Glendowie to Avondale, Herne Bay to Mt Wellington — including support for patients from Waiheke Island and the wider Hauraki Gulf.
Each year, Mercy Hospice supports over a thousand new referrals, reflecting the trust placed in its clinical expertise and holistic approach to care.
What We Do
Mercy Hospice offers a comprehensive range of specialist palliative care services, including:
- Community and in-home specialist care
- 8-bed Inpatient Unit for complex care needs
- Day programme for therapeutic and social support
- Counselling services
- Family, spiritual, and cultural support
- Education and training for healthcare professionals and carers
All services are provided free of charge, ensuring access to care regardless of age, background, identity, beliefs, or financial circumstances. This is made possible through the generosity and ongoing support of the local community.
Our Mission
Mercy Hospice is committed to ensuring that everyone in the community who requires palliative care receives it with professional excellence, compassion, and respect. Through service delivery, advocacy, and education, the organisation works to strengthen awareness and accessibility of high-quality end-of-life care.
Our Story
Mercy Hospice was founded by the Sisters of Mercy, a religious congregation established by Catherine McAuley in Dublin in 1831. Inspired by a legacy of service and care for those most vulnerable, the organisation continues to honour those values through modern, specialist healthcare services rooted in empathy and dignity.
Governance and Leadership
The organisation is guided by a dedicated Board and Executive Leadership Team who ensure strong governance, strategic direction, and clinical excellence across all services.
Careers and Community
Behind every patient journey is a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, counsellors, spiritual advisors, educators, and support staff. Mercy Hospice also welcomes volunteers and community partners who contribute to delivering compassionate, person-centred care.
Accountability and Transparency
Mercy Hospice publishes an annual Gratitude Report outlining its impact, achievements, and financial transparency. Continuous quality improvement and community feedback remain central to its commitment to excellence.
